Reading Intervention Software for Grades 4+

Help older students quickly get back on track with reading through the Reading Horizons Elevate® Software. In response to student performance, the software program provides additional instruction on the specific skills that are preventing a student’s reading success—leading to efficient progress that fuels student motivation. When students struggle with a reading skill, teachers are alerted so they can quickly intervene with targeted instruction.

The Reading Horizons Elevate® Software leads to efficient reading gains for struggling readers and English Language Learners in the following ways:

Independent Learning

Autonomous learning through software instruction helps struggling students rebuild their confidence and gives them the freedom to struggle without embarrassment. Students can also access the online software from home so they can progress through the software at the pace they want.

Individualized Instruction

The variation in older students’ skills makes it extremely difficult to provide the right level of intervention to a whole class of students. The software uses a series of assessments to highly individualize instruction to efficiently target the specific skill deficits that are preventing a student from making progress with reading.

Virtual Instruction

The software can be used to provide students with reading instruction based on the Science of Reading in a virtual setting. The software allows teachers to review assessment and performance data, monitor student progress, and receive alerts when a student needs additional support and intervention.

STUDENT INSTRUCTION

Filling the Gaps

When older students struggle with reading, it is usually because they have a gap in their foundational reading skills. The Reading Horizons Elevate® Software works to identify and fill these gaps and deliver the right depth of instruction for each student on each of the skills needed for proficient reading.

Lesson content covers

  • All of the phonetic and decoding skills of the Reading Horizons® method
  • The 300 most common sight words of the English language (Most Common Words)
  • Basic grammar skills (Reference lessons)

Each of these skills are presented in a deliberate sequence that starts with the simplest skill and builds to the more complex, one skill at a time.

STUDENT ASSESSMENT

Identify Gaps & Measure Progress

To pinpoint student needs and measure progress, the Reading Horizons Elevate® Software uses a series of assessments:

  • Diagnostic Assessment
  • Progress Monitoring Assessments
  • Reading Library Assessment (created in partnership with MetaMetrics® using the Lexile® Framework for Reading)
  • Chapter Tests & Quizzes
  • Lesson Skill Checks
STUDENT TRANSFER

Moving from Decoding to Comprehension

The end goal of all reading instruction is reading comprehension. When a student struggles with reading or is learning how to read the English language as a foreign language, decoding skills are a necessary step but not the end goal. To achieve the reading fluency and comprehension skills necessary for educational and vocational success, the Reading Horizons Elevate® Software includes the following tools:

ELL Tools

English Language Learners (ELLs) need the same decoding instruction as struggling readers, but they also have unique learning needs. The software provides tools specifically catered to these students. The Pronunciation tool allows students to practice and review the proper pronunciation and tongue placement for each English sound. Schools can also enable language translations for lesson material when language is a significant hurdle to student understanding. Language translations are available in Spanish, Mandarin Chinese, and Japanese (purchased separately).

Vocabulary Building

As students master decoding skills, they reinforce these skills through vocabulary practice that provides the pronunciation, definition, and proper decoding of thousands of words. Students can also use the Dictionary tool to look up new or unfamiliar words they encounter as they read more material. Building vocabulary skills also helps students improve their reading fluency and comprehension.

Reading Library

Students are more motivated to read when a text appeals to their interests, matches their skill level, and is age-appropriate. All of the reading passages in the software were written to appeal to older students while providing material at every reading level, grades 1-12. The Reading Library Assessment determines each student’s Lexile® measure and unlocks passages that match their skill level. With hundreds of passages covering a wide variety of topics, students can always find a passage that appeals to their interests.
STUDENT ENGAGEMENT

Fueling Motivation for Struggling Readers

Success breeds motivation, especially for students who have struggled in the past. Because each skill must be mastered before moving forward, students experience success with each skill. To further fuel student motivation, students earn badges as they complete goals and access language-based games. Students can also review their progress at any time to keep them engaged and focused.

DIRECT INSTRUCTION MATERIALS

Provide Targeted Support

The Reading Horizons Elevate® direct instruction materials are the perfect companion to this software program. The direct instruction materials give teachers a detailed guide for providing additional intervention and instruction that students need to master each decoding skill. When the software alerts the teacher that a student is struggling, these materials give the teacher the confidence to provide the hands-on practice needed to keep students moving forward.
