MTSS is more than a hot topic or a trend in literacy teaching and learning. In this Literacy Talks podcast episode, our three experts share their insights into making a Multi-Tiered System of Supports work to help students achieve reading proficiency. They talk emphatically about the need to strengthen Tier 1 response to intervention and the larger view of MTSS that encompasses a spectrum of supports, including professional development, small group, and individualized interventions. If you’re looking for a new and deeper understanding of what MTSS is all about, this episode is for you and your colleagues.

  1. Thank you so much for this episode, Stacy, Donell, and Lindsay!
There were some significant differences between MTSS and RTI that I don’t think I ever realized I was missing until listening to this podcast.
Here is a wondering of mine…
Once students cross the threshold into special education, what is their relationship with tiered intervention?

    • Lindsay replied to me directly via email. I am sharing her response below.

      Hi Jillian,
All students who need tiered intervention should get tiered intervention, regardless of whether they’re in special education. The point of intervention is not just to get them into special education but to help them become proficient. So, these students will still need both intervention and accommodations. I hope that helps!
